Alumina Hydrate is the preferred source of alumina used in glazes to increase hardness and stability and aid in craze resistance and adhesion. Also, it's commonly used as a kiln wash in salt kilns due to its high refractory quality. If it is used in a glaze in excess, it will tend to give a matte surface.
